Golf Tips and Drills
Perfect Posture
The path to a perfect golf swing is through perfect posture. One of the most over looked fundamentals in the golf swing and one of the biggest sources of swing errors. In this article we are going to talk about how to setup into the proper posture position and how to maintain it during our swing. We will also cover some of the cause and effects that posture can create in the golf swing.
We will first start with how to setup into the perfect posture position.
1. Start by standing straight up and down, legs locked, shoulders back and eyes looking forward.
2. Place a golf club horizontally across your hipbone, just below your belt line.
3. Push back on the club and allow your chest to move forward while keeping your knees still in the locked position, this will create a bend at the waist.
4. Allow your arms to hang freely from their sockets; arms should be hanging at a 90-degree angle and free from interference with your thighs.
5. Allow your knees to pop out of the locked position and into a slight flexed position. We want the knees to be in a position where we could dance or move around freely.
6. Meet your hands in the middle, or place them in the prayer position, now slide the club between the hands and take your grip.
7. Finally we want our weight to be on the balls of the feet. To do this, rock onto your heel, then onto your toe and finally back onto your balls of your feet.
We are now in an athletic setup position where we can make a nice aggressive golf swing and still keep our balance.
Where most people go wrong with their setups is step 3, bending at the hips. Most people when told to bend at their hips just round their spine. What this does is keep our weight on our heels and our arms will always hang down and interfere with our thighs. We should always have a nice 4-6 inch gap between our arms and our thighs; this gap should be natural if our posture is correct. If our hands hit our thighs when we start they are going to hit them again as we swing.
Maintaining our posture during the swing is just as important if not more important then starting in the correct posture. Because most people don’t start in the correct posture they are forced to move their bodies up or down during the swing in order to try to hit the golf ball. Whenever we move our body up or down we also move the club up or down, and if the club is moving how would we ever expect to hit the golf ball properly or consistently.
This is the cause of all the topped or thinned golf shots and all the heavy or fat golf shots. When our body goes up the club goes up and we top the golf ball. When our body goes down the club goes down and we will hit behind the golf ball, hitting it heavy.
The only way to make sure that when we swing our body doesn’t move up or down is to make sure we start in the correct posture. By starting correctly we take out all reason to have to move because we are in the proper position and our body can swing freely without any interference.
If we start in our perfect posture we would have our hands/arms hanging naturally down from our shoulders, they would be fully extended and we would have the club soled on the ground. If we start with the club touching the ground and we don’t change our posture during our swing then we should be able to bring the club back to the ground every time. Try this drill to find out if your body is moving, start in your posture, make a full swing and try to get the club to sweep along the grass through impact. If the club sweeps the grass perfectly then our posture was maintained during the swing. If we miss the grass that means we moved up during our swing and if we hit the ground to much that means we moved down during the swing.
Work on this drill “sweep the grass” to help you improve your posture but more importantly help you improve your ball striking and consistence.
